Interview – Giles King

Interview with performer Giles King, a long standing member of the Kneehigh Family who has performed with us over many years. His most recent shows include 946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips and Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs).

Patrycja Kujawska

Patrycja is a polish musician, dancer and actress who’s been a part of the Kneehigh family for over 7 years. Her first performance with us was in Don John and she’s since gone on to play parts such as Yseult in Tristan & Yseult and The Girl in The Red Shoes.

 

Biography

Patrycja studied violin at the Academy of Music in Poland. Before moving to UK she worked extensively with physical theatre company Dada von Bzdulow, City Theatre in Gdynia, and Non-Cabaret at the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre.

She also danced in shows choreographed by Tatiana Baganova and Avi Kaiser.

Patrycja wrote music for dance solo Face, a short animated film and Soundtrack for the Sculptures inspired by work of sculptor Sabrina Gruss; and co-composed music for Vincent Dance Theatre’s Test Run and Motherland.

From 2008 she has worked with Kneehigh, shows include: Tristan & Yseult (UK and US Tours); Don John (co-production with RSC); Midnight’s Pumpkin, the critically acclaimed The Red Shoes, and The Wild Bride which toured USA (New York, San Francisco), Australia and New Zealand.

For Vincent Dance Theatre Patrycja has made and toured: Drop Dead Gorgeous (2001); Let The Mountains Lead You To Love (2003); Punch Drunk (2004); Broken Chords (2005); Fairy ?Tale (2006); Test Run (2006, 2008); If We Go On (2009) and Motherland (2012).

Mike Shepherd

Mike Shepherd started Kneehigh in 1980 and has worked almost exclusively for the company ever since. Mike is an actor, director and teacher and has an ongoing preoccupation with the conditions of creativity. He is currently joint artistic director with Emma Rice.

As well as touring the world as a Kneehigh actor, Mike runs the Connections programme with Anna Maria Murphy, “engaging creatively with communities through event and adventure ”, and is a pioneer of Kneehigh’s transformable and transportable venue, the Asylum.

Recent shows as an actor include: The Wooden Frock, The Bacchae, The Red Shoes, Tristan and Yseult, Cymbeline, A Matter of Life and Death, Don John, Midnight’s Pumpkin, Steptoe and Son, 946 and the motion picture Anna Karenina.

As a director: Hansel and Gretel, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings (puppet version with Little Angel Theatre), and The Kneehigh Rambles (co-directed with Emma Rice). Mike is developed a new version of The Beggar’s Opera in 2014, called Dead Dog In A Suitcase (and other love songs) with composer and conductor, Charles Hazlewood, and Kneehigh stalwart, Carl Grose.

Marc Antolin

Marc Antolin is a Welsh actor who first joined Kneehigh as Marc Chagall in The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk

Bethany Lyne

Our Development Manager Bethany tells us how she came to work for Kneehigh and her journey to being where she is now.

My first experience of Kneehigh was when I was 6. I took part in a workshop led by Anna Murphy and Alice King to make banners for the 1997 An Gof commemoration walk to London. I remember sitting on the floor in the school hall cutting out newspaper shapes and fabric, and my banner was one chosen to be carried all the way on the march to London.

Fast forward to 15 years later and I was sitting at my desk at the end of my third year at Exeter University wondering how on earth I was going to get a job when I left. Up popped a Tweet from Kneehigh with a call out for volunteers to be part of their Front of House team at the Asylum, and I applied.

I had a great summer volunteering on Steptoe & Son, meeting lots of brilliant people, and finding out how a theatre venue ran. I learnt that the best way to be a volunteer is to be enthusiastic, whatever the task, and to really care about what you are doing, even if it is just mopping a stage.   I also volunteered to help with marketing and I drove around the busy summer villages and towns giving out flyers and putting up posters for the show. During my time at the Asylum I met Sally Knight the Artistic Director of Cscape Dance and I also volunteered for her, completing administration tasks around the If the Shoe Fits tour.

This was then followed by volunteering on the 2012 Village Hall tour of the Kneehigh Rambles Show. I visited the shows and ran a competition to collect the audience data, and then visited the Kneehigh Office to collect the data into spreadsheets.

This volunteering experience meant that when the position for an Administrator and Development Assistant came up at Kneehigh I was already known to the organisation and was invited to interview.  I had some administration experience from working with Cscape, and I could talk in much greater detail about Rambles, the Asylum, and Kneehigh in general at the interview.

I think perhaps the best way to begin to pursue a career in the arts is to volunteer with an organisation that you admire. It is a great way to gain experience and learning and to also meet other people working and volunteering in the industry. It is no guarantee that you will be offered a job, in fact this is quite unlikely, but often it will lead to other opportunities which could end in employment. It’s also a really brilliant thing to do! I still volunteer for arts organisations as I think it’s a good way to find out how other organisations work and be part of some great projects.

I have now been at Kneehigh for 4 years moving from Development Assistant to Development Officer, and recently to Development Manager. Interestingly one of the volunteers I met at my first shift was Millie Jones, and she now sits in the office across from me as our Production Assistant!

Lucy Rivers

Lucy is joining us for the first time on the autumn tour of Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs).

 

Biography

Lucy is an actor, writer, composer, and musician, and is co-founder of the Cardiff based theatre company Gagglebabble.

Writing, performing and composing credits include: The Bloody Ballad (Edinburgh, Soho and UK tour) which has won a total of 6 awards, and The Forsythe Sisters for Gagglebabble; The Devil’s Violin for BBC Radio 4; The Little Sure Shot for The Egg and West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Performing credits include: The Village Social for National Theatre Wales; My Name is Sue by Dafydd James and Ben Lewis; Journey to the Riversea for Unicorn; Grapes of Wrath and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Clwyd Theatre Cymru); Not I for Chapter Arts Centre; The Blood of Other’s (Arcola Theatre); Missing (Theatr Iolo); The Borrowers, Babe, James and the Giant Peach (Sherman Cymru).

Composer credits: The Bear (Polka, The Albany); Father Christmas (Lyric Hammersmith and West Yorkshire Playhouse); Sleeping Beauties, The Happy Prince, The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend (Sherman Cymru); Y Storm (Theatr Genedlaethol), Grimm Tales (Theatr Iolo), Finding Mr Average (Channel 4); and 8 large puppet shows for RWCMD. She is also one half of the Welsh folk duo OLION BYW.

Lucy is currently developing a new show with Gagglebabble called Wonderman based on Roald Dahls’ adult short stories.

Awards for The Bloody Ballad; Winner of Best Musical and Best Music at What’s On Stage, Musical Theatre Network Awards. Brighton Fringe Emerging Talent Award. Best Music and Best Ensemble at the Theatre Critics of Wales Awards 2014. Argus Angel award for Artistic Excellence, Brighton Fringe 2014.

Having been brought up on Kneehigh shows since she was knee high, Lucy is very excited to be working with them on Dead Dog In a Suitcase (and other love songs).

Jack Shalloo

Jack is a new member of the Kneehigh family, joining us for the UK tour of Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs).

 

Biography

Jack, a native Londoner, trained at Colins Performing Arts. He recently finished playing Mr Bucket in the original production of Sam Mendes’ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Jack released an album of original songs in 2012 called London Soul and is also a co-writer/developer of the hit cult online sketch show The Sketchbank.

Beverly Rudd

Beverly Rudd first performed with Kneehigh in Brief Encounter and has returned for the autumn tour of Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs).

 

Biography

Beverly trained at LAMDA.

Stu Barker

Stu Barker is a Composer and Music Director who’s worked with Kneehigh over many years. He is also an Associate Artist of the company.

 

Biography

Stu has worked extensively as composer /musical director with Kneehigh over the last 20 years. Work as composer or musical director includes: A Matter of Life and Death, Tristan & Yseult (National Theatre); Brief Encounter (Broadway / West End); Cymbeline, Don John (RSC); 946 – The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips (Kneehigh); Hansel and Gretel (Bristol Old Vic); The Bacchae, The Wooden Frock (West Yorkshire Playhouse); Nights at the Circus, The Red Shoes (Lyric Hammersmith); The Wild Bride, Rapunzel, Midnight Pumpkin (Battersea Arts Centre) and Pandora’s Box (Northern Stage). Previous work for Shakespeare’s Globe includes: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Winter’s Tale and Romeo and Juliet. Stu has also worked with Bristol Old Vic, Donmar Warehouse, Welfare State International, Contact Theatre, Horse and Bamboo, Liverpool Lantern Company, And Now and Travelling Light. Simon Baker

Simon Baker is a Sound Designer and Associate Artist of Kneehigh.

 

Biography

Simon trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and is now a Fellow. His work for Kneehigh includes: 946 – The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips, Steptoe and Son (UK Tour), Rebecca (UK Tour), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (West End), Brief Encounter (West End / Broadway; 2011 Tony and Olivier Nominations for Best Sound), Don John (in association with the RSC /International Tour), The Red Shoes (International Tour) and The Wild Bride (Kneehigh / International Tour / BBC Radio Production and Cast Recording). Simon is also an Associate Artist of the Old Vic Theatre and his work includes: The Caretaker, The Master Builder, Future Conditional, High Society and Electra. Giles King

Giles King is a long time member of the Kneehigh family and has performed with the company since 1987 in a large number of shows.

 

Biography

Giles has worked with Kneehigh since 1987, involved in over thirty national and international indoor and outdoor productions. He has just come back from a five month tour of Tristan & Yseult in the USA. He produced and performed Blackfish Theatre‘s Alaska with Craig Johnson, Carl Grose and Simon Harvey which will be re-touring in the near future along with new productions. Giles has appeared as Stremov in Anna Karenina (Working Title films, Dir. Joe Wright); Lady Lydia in The Red Shoes (Kneehigh, Dir. Emma Rice); Hansel and Gretel (Kneehigh, Dir. Mike Shepherd); Frocin in Tristan & Yseult (Kneehigh, Dir. Emma Rice); and My Cousin Rachael and The King of Prussia (BBC Radio 4, Dir. Clare Grove).

Dominic Marsh

Dom Marsh has performed with Kneehigh since 2011, first appearing in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
